see the Ford info below.īuyer's Guide Results by FORD: Part Number: SW2103 Description: Miesk5 NOTE: Also, a shop or PO could have installed this PN in earlier MY Broncos and some parts stores could have NOS still in stock. The SW-2103 Light Switch Assembly discussed above is reportedly installed in the following Ford vehicles: 1986 -1997 F100, F150, F300 1990-1994 Explorer 1987-1994 Ranger 1987-1990 Bronco II 1992-1997 Aerostar." Therefore, a small increase in failure rate owing to age and wear could result in a significant increase in fire losses. However, this particular light switch has been utilized in numerous Ford vehicles. To this date the problem appears to be somewhat limited. If the former is true, we expect there will be an increase in fires caused through this mechanism given an increase in service time. The mechanism is precipitated by wear and/or defect in the coil mechanism. This mechanism has been observed in three separate incidents by this office. When this occurs, a current can flow through a portion of the coil creating high temperatures melting the metal material of the coil and possibly igniting surrounding combustibles.

A fractured coil can maneuver itself free of the ceramic disc permitting it to come in contact with the metal bracket which mounts and grounds the switch to the vehicle. Through our investigations, we have found that the coil can fail owing to wear and/or possible material defects or damage. The opposite position provides greatest intensity. The greater amount of coil through which the current is permitted to pass (clockwise most position) creates the greatest resistance and therefore dims the dash lighting to its lowest intensity. The front side of the coil passes across a contact permitting a current to flow through a certain portion of the coil when the switch is pulled our in its first or second positions. The coil is exposed on its front side away from the passenger compartment. The dimmer mechanism consists of a metallic resistive coil set inside a ceramic disc positioned over the shaft of the switch. The potential problem exists within the dimmer portion of this switch. Fully rotating the shaft counterclockwise past a notch activates the interior lights within the vehicles. The shaft of this pull-out light switch can be turned clockwise and counterclockwise which activates a dimmer switch, lowering and raising the intensity of the lighting in the instrument panels respectively. The headlight portion of the switch has two pullout positions, the first for parking lights only, and fully out for headlights and parking lights. These are the pull out type headlight switches usually located in the lower left corner of the front dash of Ford vehicles. The light switch involved is a Model SW-2103. The problem exists within the dimmer portion of the headlight switch in Ford vehicles. They are in the middle facing each other.Headlight Switch Fires, Part Number SW-2103: ".Over the past two years, this office has experienced fires caused by another potential problem in Ford vehicles. The locking tabs on the switches can be seen in the picture above. You have to lift them a way from the switch to release the locks. The switch uses two locking tabs to hold the switch in place. I used a fused jumper wire and connected the brown and green wires as shown below.ĭiagnosis and replacement of a faulty panel dimming switch. I unplugged the panel dimming switch and checked for power on the brown wire with the tail lights switched on. I found that it was loose enough to pull the corner out far enough to access the headlight and panel dimming switches. Someone had been in this dash and the trim panel was very loose. No power at the fuse meant that more than likely the panel dimming switch was faulty. Either all of the bulbs would have been blown or the common ground would be faulty. If power had been present and the fuse was good, I would have one of two problems. I checked the illumination fuse located in the fuse #4 position and no power was present.

This is a warning feature to allow the driver to know that the tail lights may not be working and they should be checked. Dash lights are designed to not work whenever the tail lights are not working.
#95 k1500 no dashlights license
A quick checked showed that the tail and license plate lights came on, so I knew that the park/tail light part of the circuit was okay. The customer drives a good bit at night and does not want to take a chance on getting a speeding ticket. This 1995 Chevrolet S10 came in with the complaint that the dash illumination lights do not work.
